Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness is a role-playing video game that was first released in 1981.
Developed by Richard Garriott, who is also known by his pseudonym Lord British, it is the first installment in the Ultima series, one of the most influential series in the history of video games.
The game was originally created for the Apple II and was later ported to other personal computers, including the Commodore 64, IBM PC, and Atari 8-bit family.
The game set a precedent for many of the conventions that would become staples in role-playing games (RPGs), including an open world, character creation, and turn-based combat.
Players assume the role of a hero tasked with defeating the evil wizard Mondain who aims to enslave the land of Sosaria. To accomplish this, players must embark on a quest to find and destroy the Gem of Immortality, which grants Mondain his power.
